Title: Playmaker Game Jam
Post by: tcmeric on February 05, 2018, 03:03:39 AM
Hi, so some of us have been discussing putting together a playmaker game jam. Please post below if you would be interested in joining. It would likely be 48 hours long, over a weekend. A secret theme would be chosen. Rules would be pretty flexible to allow very small teams or single person teams to be able to create.

Judged or ranked, not sure yet. All done online. Itch.io seems like a good place to do it. Our unofficial playmaker slack channel is also open for chatting. https://invite-playmaker-slack.herokuapp.com

Comment below if you are interested or have ideas? I have never hosted a game jam before  8)

Great idea!
Do you think we'll have enough people for few teams, or create a single team and have a "Playmaker community game"?

Hi, this will be a playmaker game jam (rather than join someone elses game jam). So people can either form their own team to enter, or they can enter as a solo. Each team or solo will make their own game/project. One of the requirements will be that people use playmaker in their game. At the end, they are released.

Count me as interested.
I know a few other who would be interested as well.

Hi,
I would be interested also.
But i am in lack of time, especially in the weekend.
But i could help judging maybe.

djaydino, promoted to Judge  8) . I will act as a second, and maybe we need a third if Jean or Alex is interested in doing that?

(Judges may participate but may not have their games judged).

Bill Whetsel has also expressed interest, along with his class. I think we can find a few more people as well.

Do we want 3 days, so we have enough time? A friday, sat, sun? I think sometime in march would be good, as it gives us some time to prepare. But not too far in the future that it never happens.

Thoughts?

Once we have a date, I will set up the itch.

Hi,

 oh!!! nice idea!

Let me propose something: The winners of the game jam will receive this:

I think the one on the left looks better ( quality on the right is bad, but I can print it with higher def of course)

What do you think? I can can print the name, game name of the winner as well, so it would be a personal unique piece for each winner :)

In order to get more people involved, we can promote this on twitter, on the forum with a dedicated thread, explaining the rules and keeping things updated, and on the Unity forum too.

 Bye,

 Jean

Fancy! Can it be dated?

I also have 1 or two asset developers who might be willing to pitch in an asset store free coupon for the winners.

What shall we call it? 2018 Playmaker Game Jam Challenge?

Purposed rule. Coding should be 50% playmaker or more. (C# is allowed of course).
While you don't have to release your source code (as this might be an issue with playmaker and any other third party we allow), but you will be required to screen shot FSM?

Thoughts?

As we want to make it educational, maybe a short video explaining the logic of the main few FMS?

Also, I think adding contact method for questions and help could be beneficial. Something along the lines of "Have questions about any action in the game? Contact me xxx@xxx.com"

Once we have a formal date and link, I'd love to share in Facebook groups I manage / member of :)

Hi,
i agree that we want to make it educational.

As a judge, personally i would want to see the fsm/states/actions setup as a part of the judging and to see if playmaker is used enough  ( i would set playmaker usage minimum a lot higher than 50% as it is a 'playmaker' jam :) )

You can submit without playmaker.dll and it should be fine then for playmaker
i can make a video if needed to explain what you should not add.

Sounds very nice. Can we make whatever we want? Can I use a part of a game I'm working on right now? Or do I need to start from scratch?

Hi.
With a Game Jam you usually get a certain topic and you should build your game on that topic from scratch.

Here are some gamejam rules :
https://globalgamejam.org/news/be-cool-rules

And here is some explanation about Game Jam's :

Hi,

-- yes the prize model to print can and will be dated

-- I do think that the code should be exposed, not public but definitly accessible to the judge at least, but that depends if there will be some points attributed to the quality of execution, and not just the quality of the final product (which can be very messy in the way it was executed yet compeling to the end user, and vice versa).

This is great idea!
Most likely I will not have time to participate, but surely support the idea and good to see this happening!

My 2 cents:
For the name I would vote for “Playmaker Game Jam 2018”.
And for the rules I think it should be 100% Playmaker, to create new systems/prototypes or custom actions during process. That would feel as true Playmaker jam to showcase that depending on game 90% to 100% can be made with it.

Hi, there is no limit to the amount of playmaker used. The discussion is how much must be used to join this playmaker game jam.

I am personally against 100% playmaker. While I love the system, there are cases when c# I feel is more appropriate. Not everything needs to be a FSM in programming.

In the event that we do say it has to be 100% playmaker, that does rule out using any third party code completely. So that is something to consider as well.

Ultimately my goal here is for this to be fun for us as a community, push our creative skills and improve. So enough rules to make it fair,  but not too many that it sucks out all the fun  8)

On another note, we have our first prize sponsor!!  ;D

Alex from Ez Entertainment will give out 1 copy of:
https://assetstore.unity.com/publishers/24770

Ez Ads
Ez Bind
Ez Data Manager
Ez Pooly

for the winner.

All of course have playmaker support (except Ez Bind, but it is a codeless solution so it doesnt need PM). I am personally a big fan of Ez Pooly and use it myself!

Good point, yeah probably 100% Playmaker rule could be too limiting. And actually using PM + code can demonstrate the workflow how to combine them and use on assets etc.

I could give some keys for prizes from my assets too.

I think you misunderstood what i said.
i mean it should be more than 50% Playmaker.
So more Playmaker is good, less than that i would not accept as it is a 'Playmaker' Jam.

100% Playmaker i would also disagree.

@Jean i would go for the left one also :)

Hi,

you are right. The most powerful usage of PlayMaker is when it's combined with regular c#

However we could have a category 100% playmaker, I think custom actions and component proxy do fit in the 100% category, so using everything from the wiki or ecosystem and similar is fine. But if you create a component to control something without playmaker being involved in the process, then you are no in that category anymore. I think using assets from the asset store also do not count, it's fine to use what's available, it's if you start coding in c# instead of PlayMaker that you don't fit in the 100% category.

What do you think? Could be a special prize for this.

 Bye,

 Jean
Title: Re: Playmaker Game Jam

Sounds good to me.

I didnt want to completely limit asset store usage, because I think 3d/2d models and sounds from third party may be important in a game jam that is only 3 days long, and I expect many solo teams. I think it would be hard for many of us here to record sounds and build 3d/2d models/art, materials, etc in that short of time (instead of focusing on our FSMs).

Certainly, each entry much submit which third party assets/work was used, and this will be taken into account in the judging. IMHO, it wont be held against you, but it also wont be judged for extra points either.  8)

As a small prize to the winner, would it be worth asking developers to see if they'd be happy to offer a free copy of their PlayMaker-based published games? I'd be happy to provide a redeemable Google Play Store code for mine. Just an idea :)

Hi,

yes, I think the best option would be that every one who wants to sponsor this game jam comes forward, and the winners will end up with a bunch of games and assets, this would be a very participative way to grant participants and winners with a feeling of community.

what do you think? If that's an idea that you like, we could have a google sheet or some kind of online document where we list all the prizes, all the categories and rules?

Would it be cheeky to ask Unity if they'd be able to offer some support/advertising/prizes too? They have published videos from their official YouTube account with PlayMaker tutorials so would be in their interest to raise awareness of the event ;)

Just say the word and I'll email across a redeemable code and a logo, should you need one.

Here's my game on the Play Store - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.MolberGames.CrashyBashBoom

It's not on the App Store at the moment as I'm PC-based and that $99 yearly subscription fee is a bit too much for my wallet at the moment.

My app is a kids game, but even if it's given as a prize for proof of what can be done using PlayMaker, it's all good. My game is 100% FSM-based as I'm a graphic designer by trade, so PlayMaker was my way of finally building something without spending a year or two having to learn code.

I agree, make it educational.

Maybe submissions should include a simple postmortem (text or video) explaining the playmaker logic...?

Alternatively projects could be submitted with a short tutorial about a Playmaker mechanic or logic included in the game....?

Sounds like fun!

Do contribute to this by allowing people to tinker with the results of your game.

This is from the 'global Game Jam' rules and i totally agree on this.
It is mend to be educational.

And it will be, if others can look to their fsms/states/actions setups and learn from each other.

Also i would allow only free 3rd party assets (except for Playmaker of course) and self made assets to be used. this way it is easier to be shared.
other game jams also usually use their own made assets + with playmaker you can make something faster than in coding so that should be fine.

Hi Kurt.

I was thinking, maybe we could work with the eco packer so that we have built in the dll removal of PlayMaker, and then participant can safely just pack their game as a package and be sure it iwll not contain the dll? I think it could be a good option. next to the package, sample, action, we could have GameJam as a new type of output?

Hi.
That could be a good idea, but maybe we should make a separate one for the Gamejam that can also upload it somewhere (similar to the asset store tool)

As it should get the complete project (except playmaker) , it will be a lot easier.

simply open the tool, set user name and submit.

Hi,

yeah, even better. Maybe it should be generic as in being able to share a project or package to communities without risking sharing the playmaker dll.

Hi.
1st beta version is here to try, get it on the attachment below.

Edit : 2nd version now.

Author :
place your (nick)name

Package name :
Place a name for your package (for example the name of the game)

Game Jam Submission Folder :
Place the folder from your game that you submit.
you should place all own made assets into that folder
including scenes/materials/prefabs/....
Do not place 3rd party assets into that folder

Target Directory :
Select the directory where you want to save the package.

3rd party assets :
Place a 3rd party asset name and Url that you used in the asset and press 'add' to add the asset to the list.

Can some peeps test it out if it works (especially on Mac as i can't test on mac)
and also try to "accidentally" break the asset :)

When you create the package there also should be a "Read Me" folder added to your submission folder.
If you can check if the file is there and if the text looks Ok.

No, I did not get any errors. And I can't find it anywhere on the Unity or in the project's folder when looking with Finder. Also, it does not exist in the location where it did .unitypackage.

This is only what the exporter printed to console:
Quote
Assets/GameJamFolder\README.txt
UnityEngine.Debug:Log(Object)
PlaymakerGjamExporter:CreateReadMe() (at Assets/PmGameJam/Editor/PlaymakerGjamExporter.cs:560)
PlaymakerGjamExporter:CreatePackage() (at Assets/PmGameJam/Editor/PlaymakerGjamExporter.cs:444)
PlaymakerGjamExporter:_CreatePackageButton() (at Assets/PmGameJam/Editor/PlaymakerGjamExporter.cs:111)
PlaymakerGjamExporter:OnGUI() (at Assets/PmGameJam/Editor/PlaymakerGjamExporter.cs:73)
UnityEngine.GUIUtility:ProcessEvent(Int32, IntPtr)
And I noticed that the path seems to be weird.

But after changing the line 559 in the PlaymakerGjamExporter.cs from:

Code: [Select]
string readMePath = gjFolder + "\\" + "README.txt";
to this -->
Code: [Select]
string readMePath = gjFolder + "/" + "README.txt";
It then creates the README.txt file successfully.

Hi.
Thanks for testing some more
Yep i noticed that one also, but then after some testing i had some issues that the package was build before the readme was finished and then it was not included in the package, but it was included in the folder.
So i added a 'while' loop to be sure it gets included.

Below is the updated version, again thanks for testing

Readme.txt is now in the correct folder.

But there are some possible issues. I took screenshots of those that are in the attachments.

1.) While importing the created package, there seems to be more in it than needed. I only dragged "GameJamTestFolder" to the exporter, but there are also my other testing folders shown (not selected though).

2.) If I press the delete/x-button after added asset it will throw an error in the console. It still works, but to let you know.

Hi.
1) The Library and the project settings should be included yes.
But In the "jamscene" did you use some stuff from that holoLens?
i can see that several dlls got include above your jamscene.
could you send a link to me from the package so i can test when i import this?

2)The delete out of range only seems to happen on the top asset (when there are more)
It works but i will look to change it, so there will not be an error
I will also adjust the X size.

Text area is a very good idea for instructions/descriptions
I will add this.

I will try to update tonight if i don't have to much work today :)

Thx again for testing/helping

In the scene that is in the GameJamTestFolder I used only ProBuilder.
And I personally don't have HoloLens or haven't downloaded anything for it (at least on purpose).

I did create a whole new project.

1.) Created folder named: JamFolder
2.) I saved the scene there as mainScene and leave it as default, with no changes to the scene
3.) Imported Playmaker to project and installed it
4.) Then used the exporter

The created package is approximately 26,8Mb big and in the picture, there seems to be so much in it that it seems to look from the filesystem, not just from the project.

Hi,
I just noticed that the hololens and the other folders are from unity itself so they can stay included.

Preferences and stuff need to be included as the projects are complete project and might have changes in (for example) the input manager.
And i just found out that tags and layers are also included there so i can leave them out from the read me :)

i will start to make a build now with your suggestion :)

Theme to be announced around 12 hours for now.

Thanks. Making a project file and importing playmaker just in case the theme fits what I can do. This would be my first game jam, only vaguely heard about them, and have no idea what kind of themes to expect.

We are just 12 hours away from the start, which means.... theme announcement!

We have 2 different themes. You can pick one or both themes for your game jam project.

1. Last Resort.
2. Not a Hero.

Also, don't forget, it is ok to setup a new unity project, setup playmaker and bookmark any assets/resources you think you might want to use. HOWEVER, do not start your jam until 12 more hours.

See you on slack: https://invite-playmaker-slack.herokuapp.com

I didn't understand these two themes.
Aren't Last Resort and Not A Hero two games which already exist?

Will it be something related to these games? Or do I make a game related only to the name.

It is just a theme, not referencing to any existing material produced.
Not related to any existing art/thing (game, movie, book, painting etc.).

Hope to see you participate in the jam!

Correct. They are just abstract themes to apply to your game. How you apply them is up to you, however, your game must apply to them in some way. Also, on your itch page when you upload your game, you will need to say how it applies.

I'm stuck before I've started. I have no ideas right now. I am also afraid if I make something, and it's not correct, so I think I cancel this time. Maybe I can join next time, if there will be a next time. I'm sorry! :(

Hi, seems like it is not working for me. Doesnt include my selected export folder. I ran the newest version and an earlier version. System in PC, windows7, unity 2017.3.

To everyone else. Please submit your game (without source files) to itch at the deadline end. (Monday morning 8AM PST).

We will allow for 1 week before the source files need to be submitted. Due to space limitations of itch, dropbox will be accepted (or other file hosting). Please send the link to me, or post the link on your itch page.

Thanks!

Hi, did you drag in the folder?

You should fill up all fields and drag in the folder
Also select a folder where to save the package.

I will make a video how to do, tonight when i get home

Thanks. I just gave it another try now. Dragged the folder in with all of my exports (see screen shot of everything in my export folder). When it makes the package, it doesnt include any of that folder.

Thanks!

Should we provide download links to source files for tcmeric and he shares them with the judges?

Seems not to be a good idea to share it with ALL users of itch.io as the source was only meant for judges.

Hi.
Actually it is meant for the public, so other playmaker users can compare the workflow of others.
and maybe learn a different "coding" approach or some different ways to do stuff.
For example using templates or run fsms, certain loops, using array and so on.

But for now it is not a requirement and how you code is not judged :)

Hi!

Just a question! How will the winner be chosen? Will the judges decide the winner, or will it be the game with the highest ratings?

Hi,

Details are on the itch page.

Three categories are by judge. The top prize is voted by the community. Voting ends 1 month after the Jam finished.
