Title: Renaming Global Variables. [PENDING]
Post by: grimmy on April 06, 2013, 05:08:57 PM
I can't do it.

Every-time I type the new name in the 'edit variable' text box it just resets back to what it was. Is this supposed to work?

I just tested here and it seems to be working fine...

Are you hitting enter after renaming the variable?

Oh yeah..hitting return does the trick. I think I was hitting refresh or just deselecting. Now I know, it seems obvious. Thanks

Hi,

I can't rename a Global Variable because I don't see "Edit Variable" but only "variable" and it's grayed out.

why is that?

Renaming Global Variables was removed a few versions ago, due to a bug I think.

I can't wait for it to come back personally, as my project variables are a bit of a mess.

I didn't update playmaker for some time, is renaming global variables functionality added back to playmaker?

Hi,

nop... It's unfortunate, I think the feature is cornered because of backward compatibilties ( it's my guess, the complexity of this issue is great indeed). Same with global events.

 Bye,

 Jean

I'll be working on this after 1.8.0 is released. There is an issue with backwards compatibility that requires some infrastructure to scan all scenes in a project. The good news is this infrastructure will enable a lot of powerful project tools beyond just fixing the renaming of globals (e.g., advanced search and organizational tools)

Hi Alex,

I very much like the sound of that indeed!

Sounds very promising!

Hi,

No, this is still not available unfortunatly.

Not wanting to be pushy or looking to be too entitled, nor wanting to re-necroing old posts... but I only wanted to say that being able to rename globals would be so hugely great...  ::)

I know I'm an amateur "coder" at best and that a good one would try to avoid globals like the pest, but I'm no pro and I'm also a horrible planner, so I find myself continuously regretting the name I give to globals, making the final list of my variables an awful mess.

So... yeah. It would be great to have that ability. Just saying, pretty please and all that...  ;)

+1  :'(

Can we remove SOLVED?

Hi,

yeah... I remove the "SOLVED", it's misleading indeed.

This issue with global variable is a pain, we all agree on this, but unfortunatly, I think there is a deep down issue with this which prevents renaming without compromising other Fsms in other scene and packages.

Hopefully, this will get addressed one way or the other...

Bye,

 Jean

Any word on this? My project is a mess and I need to rearrange things

Yeah, i think it should be pushed up a bit if it is still on that trello board. I know all that dandy vr support and what not brings you cash, but this is kinda basic workflow funcionality (not saying that it's easy to make, basic in terms of necessity for normal work).

I just noticed- its possible to rename global variables similar to how renaming global events is currently handled--

Right click on the global variable and Make Local Variable, rename it, right click to set back to global

Are the references still intact after that sort of fiddling?

Sorry about that- should have tested in depth.

It updated correctly for multiple actions in the same FSM but after checking again, not in other FSMs. So no, it doesn't work :/

+1 for hoping global variable renaming is on the feature list

Hi,

yeah, Global variables renaming is a major issue, unfortunatly the solution isn't there for technical reasons without seriously compromising the project. hopefully a solution will be found at some point.

 Bye,

 Jean
