Hey guys, just wanted to let you know the kit has just been updated to v1.3. Among other minor improvements, the kit has had it's animation system completely overhauled. Now swapping the default character with your own is a breeze, you'll find detailed instructions in the revamped documentation. Setup is now much simpler as well.

Hope you're all enjoying the kit,
Graham

The demo is great. Thanks for the hard work!
I'm thinking to get it before the end of next week.

- Is it possible to put the camera on a path so it can change angle( like pandemonium (http://youtu.be/qxAvJxHc0v8), nights, etc)
- Are you planing to add lifes and enemy interaction (bouncing on head, punching or shooting for example)?

Thanks!

clandestine: Thanks for the kind words. I am indeed planning to add lives, checkpoints and basic enemies hopefully in the next update. I'm also working to add mobile support right now.

As for the camera, I wasn't planning on doing anything like that with this kit. However I have been wanting to do something exactly like that for one of my projects, if I get it working someday I'll add it to the kit. A camera on rails would be a great addition.

Thats really great! As for the camera, don't worry, if you do it, it will be great, if not its ok anyway... BUT you cant deny the depth that these slight changes in perspective can add to the game.

Pandemonium is the first one i saw doing that back in 1996, then came Nights Into Dreams, Klonoa, Kirby 64, etc.
The interesting thing is that the industry seems to be in love with this old method again in recent games such as Batman Arkham Origins: Blackgate (http://youtu.be/6qei3xmNOlo), also the most hyped graphical update for the upcoming Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (http://youtu.be/DueE8vJXpo8) for the WiiU, is precisely this! If you feel like giving it a shot, you can add it to the package, or you can sell it as an add-on, or as a completely separate product. I'll be very grateful in any case.

Thanks Graham!

Purchased as promised! I'll work with it as soon as i finish my current project! At the moment i'm planning to create a small educational platformer for 1~2~3 grade children. But as a hardcore gamer i'll focus more on the gameplay and graphics :D

Thank for the great work Graham!

That demo is great, only thing keeping my from buying right now is 2 actions
i would need.

In this demo they would/could show as

1 - pickup/drop the heart! (pickup/dropping objects)
2 - gribbing on a platform side.
(detect platform and hold on to it while key is pressed, either climb up after 1 sec, or fall down on release)

Other than that, it looks great

@ clandestine: The asset store update is still delayed for some reason. If you want to get your hands on the newest version you can send me your invoice number and I will send you the updated v1.4 package. This applies to everyone else as well.

@Loganou974: Thanks!

@ VaupellAgainNoMailReceive: Thank you for your input, I will keep these features in mind for the future.

Just to make sure, does this mean a person can take the animation included with this asset and use it with a 3D model made for it?

This uses the legacy animation system, you will have to use a 3d model that has it's own unique animations.

Does that mean you created the animation in unity or another program? If so, would it be best to use unity for creating animations like with a skeleton base animation system or would I be better animating in another program? I use blender3D to make 3d models.

Thanks.

Yes, basically you would have to model and animate the character all within a 3d software such as blender.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know version 1.5 just hit the asset store!

Change log:
- Basic mecanim support added.
- Numerous improvements have been made to the camera rig.
- Added Coins.
- Remaining FSMs have been fully commented and colored.
- Should no longer receive prefab error messages.
- Stuck in KillZone bug fix.
- Checkpoints now save the position of the checkpoint itself instead of the players position, this prevents respawning mid air.
- Global variables and project settings now included alongside product.

Just letting users know, there is a bug with the mobile controls in the current release. When jumping on a moving platform, the player will lose the ability to jump. If anyone is experiencing this, there is a simple fix!

You will have to add a Send Event action to both the "IDLE" and "IDLE - Platform" states. Basically fill it in exactly as shown in the attached image. In case you don't know, to fill in the gameobject you need to drag and drop the "buttonJump" child gameobject from the "Prefab_VCSMobileControls" into the slot.

That will fix it, I will add this to the next update. Please let me know if you still experience any issues.

I was using another controller for my platform game and then used playmaker to make additional things IE enemies, score etc.

I purchased your kit some time ago so just started giving it a go.

Looking good so far :)

Quick question though;

I previously found that iTween resulted in poor FPS when doing mobile, do you know if this has been resolved?

I changed it to MoveTowards instead of iTween but If I can stick with iTween I will :)
Title: Re: Playmaker Platforming Starter Kit [UPDATE!]
Post by: Graham on August 29, 2014, 09:17:11 AM
I presume you mean the platforms. Like anything, if you don't overdo it you will be fine. It depends on how many you are using at once and how long a period each is running for. If you are only using one or two at a time and disabling them when off screen, I don't think you will see any performance hit. The game I just released uses iTween for many things and you don't see any slowdown caused by it. What I don't like about MoveTowards, is the fact that it feels so stiff.

Lately I have begun using HOTween in place of iTween. It is fundamentally different in the way you integrate it, but I have found it to save a huge amount of performance on mobile. On the mobile game I just released, the main dropping of notes uses HOTween and the performance jump was very noticeable. I would recommend experimenting with that, I may be able to help if you have any questions, as I would like to switch the kit to HOTween eventually anyways.

Hey

Great thanks!

yeah I have to agree that MoveTowards is not as smooth as I would like :)

Will look into HOTween  - thanks :)

I just purchased your kit, its really nice but I am having trouble with something. Sometimes when I jump straight into a wall, the character will stick on it until I let go of the arrow. How can I fix it?
Title: Re: Playmaker Platforming Starter Kit [SALE!]
Post by: Graham on November 06, 2014, 09:42:36 AM
@villaclay
Select your "PlatformingController" object. Inside the Platforming Controller FSM notice the "JUMP" and "DOUBLE JUMP" states. In both of these states find the collision event 02 action. collision event 02 should be set to "on collision stay" instead of "on collision enter." This will fix your issue.

Just wanted to inform anyone who is interested, the platforming kit is 50% off for 24 hours on the Unity asset store!

I also have great news, a new fully featured character model is being created for this and other upcoming kits. This will allow for better mecanim integration and accommodate a wider range of requested features.

Exciting times!

Thanks lioncirth! Can you please elaborate on what part exactly you would need me to keep? Are you referring to the actual animations from my character, or do you mean the implementation of them?

I will try to leave all of the old components in if necessary, but I would like to clean up a little.

Just wanted to quickly update everyone who is interested, I've started updating the Platforming kit to support Unity 5.

The good news: It should be completed very soon, the only issues I am facing are minor and mostly caused by changes to the physics engine.

The bad news: (But in a way good ;)) I am not sure if the author of Virtual Controls Suite is going to update his asset for Unity 5, as he hasn't touched the asset since 2013. So if you are using that addon, I think you may be out of luck with Unity 5.

HOWEVER! I am going to try implementing my own mobile control solution using the new Unity GUI. I think this would be great in the long run, as mobile support will no longer require a separate asset purchase!

Thank you everyone for your patience, I will let you know as soon as it's ready.

Controls feel exactly like your asset/demo.  Love it.  Looking forward to seeing how you did it, since I made several novice attempts at 4.6 version and just went back to the GUI Texture route.

Minor nitpick here: I found that if you press on a virtual control, drag your finger off then onto a different button.. that button will trigger but not show the visual effect thats associated with being pressed.

variation of above: Press anywhere but button, then drag onto control.  Triggers, but no visual effect.

Thanks for the feedback PlaymakerNOOB. The dragging from button to button, and from anywhere on the screen to a button is intentional. I will however have to check out the lack of visual cue, did not notice that!

It's difficult to know with the Asset Store, they seem to have their plate full lately with Unity 5. But since I have already submitted I would imagine within a week it should be live. Then shortly after that there will be another update with a few more minor bug fixes and mobile tweaks which I am almost ready to submit.

I added button artwork and made some modifications to the mobile controls thanks to all the feedback. I enlarged the touch areas, added speed smoothing to the sprint function, and added button press scaling instead of color changing. I also fixed a bug that caused the player to stick to walls when pressing towards them while in mid air.

I've uploaded a new Sample APK (https://www.dropbox.com/s/g2nmc1cs5tbgiwb/Platforming%20Mobile%20Controls%20v1.1.2.apk?dl=0) for anyone who wants to try it out. This update has already been submitted for approval on the Asset Store.

I'm not sure how many people are using the Mecanim version of the controller, but I made a little mod to delay the animation when beginning a left or right run.

This has improved the look and feel of the Mecanim version, if anyone is interested I can send you a sample scene until this makes it into a release.

IMPORTANT information regarding all 3D Sauce templates!

If anyone is running into FSM or build errors, there are a few simple steps to follow that will remedy these issues until I've had time to update the packages.

Simply open all affected scenes and re-save them individually. This should fix any issues you are experiencing after updating to the latest version of any 3D Sauce template and Playmaker.

Thanks for you patience. Please don't hesitate to report any additional issues that may arise.

Have you followed the getting started section of the documentation? Please make certain that you've imported Playmaker and then imported the "Import After Playmaker" Unity package included with this template. also make certain the global variables are imported properly as stated in the docs.
