Title: New Playmaker Video Tutorial Series!
Post by: Xtopher on October 28, 2011, 07:18:47 PM
I've created a new video tutorial series, "Game Design with Playmaker and Unity"!

- 13 videos offer over 4 hours of many "bread-and-butter" game techniques using the Playmaker plug-in for Unity3D
- Covers many of the new features in Playmaker 1.2, including global variables, events, and more!
- All videos available in 1280x720, in mov format
- Starts with the basics of Playmaker and builds in complexity, so it's great for both beginners to Playmaker and those with some experience
- Helps you get to the fun faster and easier in your own projects

Three of the thirteen videos are free!  The rest will be available for purchase "very soon" either individually or in a bundle, all for a very affordable price.

00 - Introduction to Game Design with Playmaker and Unity   (free!)
01 - States Example 1 - Light Switch
02 - States Example 2 - Open and Close
03 - Triggers
04 - Introduction to Variables
05 - Breakable Objects
06 - Platform Color Change
07 - Global Variables, Events and Managers - Health Pickup
08 - Playmaker and iTween   (free!)
09 - Pop Up Manager
10 - Platform Puzzle Chest Opening Game
11 - Access Control, Clicking and and Quests
12 - Connecting Scripts to Playmaker   (free!)

I've worked at several large game companies on titles for PS3, PC, PSP and Wii, and am now the Creative Director at my new company, Well Played Games.  I'm really looking forward to making these available very soon!  As soon as the series is available I'll post here, as well as at http://www.wellplayedgames.com/ (http://www.wellplayedgames.com/) and my Twitter feeds.

Thanks Loic Joint!  And don't worry, I'm sure your English is better than my French (which I can't speak at all!)  :)

Assuming this first series does well, I have four more planned, and I'd certainly like to respond directly to user needs with topics I maybe hadn't considered.  So any suggestions are welcome!

That's great !

Personally , I am interested by the use of the Vector3 and the creation of an AI with playmaker (I would add other suggestions next time). I'm very interested by an inventory system (like diablo 1 for exemple).

I go back to your tutorials now ! Thank you again for this Awesome work !

Thanks for all the great feedback everyone!

Loic, I had been planning on showing some AI in a series on making a basic tower defense game.  Would that be something that seems interesting to you, or were you thinking of AI in a different way?

I want to thank you for this too,... they are very helpful and informative...i'll probably have some requests for future tutorials as i get further into this,  for now, the only thing that comes to mind is some further exploration on combining code with playmaker actions, or even how to create/extend actions such as when using playmaker with other middleware classes/code....

thanks again for the great work

hey Xtopher, i posted in the unity forum, but not here... i got the tutorials the instant you made them available. Very good learning material... they've been a great help in understanding some simple but very important steps that previously gave me constant headaches!!
I hope you get enough incentive to do more chapters!

I just purchased Playmaker and I`m also a Unity noob(more or less) and I have to say that I was very happy the moment I found your tutorials. They are very well done and really easy to follow.
Do you consider suggestions from users like me for new tutorials?
Thank you so much for making these tutorials.

P.S.- As clandestine said in his post, I also hope you get enough incentive to do more chapters!

Title: Re: New Playmaker Video Tutorial Series!
Post by: brendang on January 02, 2012, 10:49:44 AM
would love to see, a video tut on basic IOS (ipad for example_ touch interactivity. Something as simple as being able to spin a cube in place with your finger, or a simple gesture event.

Playmaker makes sense, but the touch thing eludes me.  I'm the creative/designer type. and it would be great to get over this one hurdle and really dig into Playmaker.

thanks,
B.

Hey Xtopher, i' with brendang on this one, I'm interested in exploring the integration of PlayMaker with multitouch and motion controls on android devices.

On the other hand we could explore setting up and controlling a vehicle?
Wiring some gui elements to it (speed, time)?
Camera control maybe?

I'm proposing 'real' game scenarios, because its easier for me to understand the situations, and of course harder for you to create them... but it would be a better marketing/selling point for beginners or artists like myself :)

thanks

First of all, sorry for the late reply.
Initially I had the idea to suggest to make some very small tutorials, specific for every action, some sort of Playmaker video manual: how do you use this node, what can you do with it (small case illustrations), things to avoid, etc.
I know, this can be a huge amount of work, almost an impossible one, but maybe starting with the most important ( or more often used actions) may be a good start.
And later, can be continued in different tutorial series, each series adding on top of the previous ones to the Playmaker Video Manual Series.

If, from vary reasons, you think this is not a good idea, I`ll be really happy with a tower defense game tutorial.
If combined with touch events, being a mobile targeted game tutorial it will be even better.
I think I`ll be the first one to buy it. :)

Thanks again for your tutorials. they are really easy to follow and indeed very very helpful.
When do you think we`ll have the pleasure of a new tutorial series?

That's a pretty awesome idea!  I'd have to talk to Alex about the feasibility of that, but I think you are right that it would be super cool.

>When do you think we`ll have the pleasure of a new tutorial series?

I'm on schedule to finish capturing a new series today and tomorrow on Cameras.  I should be able to have that edited together and up within a week.  Then I'll begin recording an iOS series, probably followed by a UI series.  I'm a little spooky on the UI one since there are some looming big changes with Unity in the pipeline.

Glad you like the idea. :)
It might be a pretty big task, considering the amount of actions, but I think it will be helpfull not only for Playmaker use, but for the general understanding of the real-time applications.

Hehe, thanks for the update. Great news! Looking forward for more learning. :)
The iOS series sounds interesting too. Maybe the differences between iPhone and IPad?
A personal opinion about the UI series: I`m waiting for the NGUi Playmaker version to be out (even though it might be out after the Unity 3.5 update). It`s a very powerful solution, even considering the Unity`s new UI tools (which according to my knowledge were postponed in the 3.5 update and about which I don`t know  anything :) ).

Another idea it might be a Playmaker - Mobile Game Mechanics series, in which with simple examples, you can approach different game types: tower defense, match3, chess, puzzle, etc. Or cover the Playmaker specifics for mobile game development: touch events, Finger Gestures, Pool Manager 2, etc.
Or maybe just Playmaker - Game Mechanics series, with more sophisticated game structures.

Thanks again for the update, and keep up the good work. :)

I'm currently running through your first series of tutorials, and I think they're awesome! You start off quite slow, but I guess everyone should have a chance to get a hang of it, before you jump to more advanced techniques.

I was just wondering, if you are planning to do anything touch related? I'm currently in an internship with a small iphone/ipad studio, but I am struggeling a bit when it comes to touch input/controls. I think it is a very contemporary subject these days, and a lot of people would benefit from such series.

Keep up the good work!

Yes!  I'm starting production on a touch/iOS series next week.  Lots of people are asking for that one.

AWESOME!!!

When is your estimated time of release for that series?

I've just made a drag system with playmaker, to drag and drop an object on a 2D plane. When I release the drag, I want the object to continue in the same angle, and with the same speed, as it got at the point of release.. Like if you toss a hockey puck across an ice surface..

My theory is to mesure the velocity in the drag state, and add it to the object when the drag ends.. But it does not seem to measure any velocity when I'm dragging (I'm using the "get velocity" action).. :(

If you could cover this in your tutorials in any way, I would be truly grateful!

>When is your estimated time of release for that series?

I'd "like" to release it in two or three weeks, but it depends what else comes up between now and then.  You know how that goes.  :)

Thanks for the drag example.  Something like that would be a good one to use.  Quick question on that... do you want the object to ever stop on it's own after dragging, or keep on going forever (or until collision, etc)?
Title: Re: New Playmaker Video Tutorial Series!

Thanks so much for this new series. Really enjoyable.

I'd "like" to release it in two or three weeks, but it depends what else comes up between now and then.  You know how that goes.  :)

That`s really good news. Regarding this future iOS series you plan next:
1. Is it something specific to iOS regarding Playmaker?
2. Do you think that using the FingersGestures actions (even as they are posted in this thread: http://hutonggames.com/playmakerforum/index.php?topic=855.0 (http://hutonggames.com/playmakerforum/index.php?topic=855.0) ) might help? If you ask me it will be a definitively yes. Maybe you can talk with the developer and he might be interested to have his product covered in this iOS series.
3. Even if there is a PlayMaker video series, are you going to cover, even briefly, some specific iOS developing and publishing issues?
4. How different are the mobile platforms, iOS and Android? (maybe a bit off the topic here :) )

Thanks for the drag example.  Something like that would be a good one to use.  Quick question on that... do you want the object to ever stop on it's own after dragging, or keep on going forever (or until collision, etc)?

Or maybe different scenarios to stop the movement: like a spring behavior, or a trigger, or maybe some physics (mass, force, speed related actions)?

When I follow video tutorials, I feel the need to make a few brief notes about the new things I find important, you know, like a short list with the main steps. Maybe such a list/steps to follow after every small chapter in a video will help the viewer to pin down/memorize the content he just followed.

Thanks again. I didn`t finished them yet, but that`s not a problem. :)

Cheers!

Quick question on that... do you want the object to ever stop on it's own after dragging, or keep on going forever (or until collision, etc)?

In my case, I want the gravity to stop it eventually. Think of it as an air hockey game.
Right now, I am getting the position of the touch input, and simply setting the position of the object to that position. The problem with that, is that it seems to ignore all physics when I drag it, allowing me to drag it through the borders.

So now I'm trying to apply force in the direction of the drag instead, but that is not that simple either.. :(

Any news on the file sharing? I think it would be a great help to actually have the FSMs in front of me whilst I'm re-watching the videos. The videos themselvs are great but when I need to look for a specific thing that you are demonstrating it can be difficult to find the exact video and where it is on that video, the files would help wih this.

Hello I just visited your website in respects to your tutorial series for PM and I would love to pick them up if the price is right... But it says the product is unavailable?

When will these be back online to purchase?

Also will you be covering Mario Brothers type character control / movements? As I am working on a game right now that requires side scrolling mario type game play.

Keep on rockin!

I bought all the Wellplayedgames video tutorials and I`m interested and waiting for the promised third series.
I don`t have a problem being free now, after I payed because the price was very generous and I`m happy that HuttongGames and Christopher Orth come to an agreement (this is just an educated guess :) ) beneficial for the Playmaker community.
I do have one question though: What about the future? Can we hope for more tutorials?
Cheers,

Firstly I'd like to voice my opinion, because I've been asking for the scene files for the tutorial for ages now,and I'd payed for both these tutorials, secondly as great as these tutorials are I'm a little miffed that a, you can't be bothered to communicate with your customers and b,you didn't even ask if your original customers where happy with you giving away your tutorials which people have already payed for, when you sign an agreement with someone you cant include the tutorials that have already been on sale without prior concent for the people that have already payed for them, and anyone that has payed are entitled to a full refund,
Do you know what, I wouldn't mind but the fact I've been asking for the scene files for over 2 months now and still you haven't replied ,jars me even more,so you either send me the file or refund me for both tutorials I've payed for, more important than any product is customer support.
When I say scene files I mean the ones at the end of the tutorial, where the hole project is put into place on the introduction To game design with playmaker And unity

Thank you

I'm sorry you felt frustrated enough to air your grievance on this public forum, but since you did I will reply.  I only ask that we resolve any further matters offline so as not to ruin this otherwise very friendly and informative thread for everyone else.  :)

I do communicate with customers and viewers daily, and spend a lot of time answering questions, taking suggestions, and thanking them for kind feedback.  I am sorry you are unhappy.  In our emails I have offered to help with your problem.  You have refused that help and instead have been demanding that I send you new content.

You are operating under a misunderstanding of how commerce works.  When you purchase something it doesn't give you legal rights to control that content in any way, only to use and benefit from it.  Paying customers benefitted from the content months before anyone else did, and get to keep hi-res versions of the video files.  Publishing the earlier tutorials for free is part of an arrangement that guarantees that everyone gets not only series 3 for free, but also all further content I make from this point on!  It's a great deal for everyone, and will get a lot more video content produced than would have been before.  I'm not negating the value of previous content, I'm adding what I feel is a tremendous amount of new content.  For everyone.  For free.

It's not fair to say I haven't replied.  I just haven't replied in the way you have been wanting.  ;)  The scene files were not part of the original packages.  That was made clear before the point of purchase.  I have had a few people ask for them though, including yourself, so I made sure to produce Series 3 with a downloadable file, complete with assets and scenes for each example in the videos.  Every FSM state has been commented, for even more explanation of their workings.  That file is available right now at:

http://www.hutonggames.com/tutorials_ios_fundamentals.php

Because Series 1 and 2 were produced in an "as you watch" style instead of the "guided tour" style of series 3, there are not project files to share that would match the videos exactly or make sense to the user.  To generate them would require a lot of extra time, and I instead decided to spend that time on developing the new iOS series (and general business activities that must be engaged in).

gamedivision, please, if you want help with parts of the tutorials just email me and I will help!  But I can't guarantee that I will produce new content for you on demand.  ;)

look i dont want to get into an argument,i ask you for the scene files you replied many others have ask for them as well, soon as i get round to it ill give them out, that was the last i heard from you,if giving out the files wasn't on your agenda then why didn't you say that in the email, sorry im not giving out the scene files.
then i wouldn't of kept asking, and you wouldn't of kept ignoring my emails, and its taken till now for you to reply.
would it really hurt you to of sent the one file i ask politely for in the first place, what would that have taken ehh maybe 5 mins of your time,i mean you just said you offered me your help anyway,im sure it would of been much quicker.
every single tutorial ive ever bought comes with scene files, you have to cater for every need, some people take longer to learn than others, some people learn quicker with actual scene files infront of them surly you should understand that being its your job.
i appreciate your tutorials they are good, but 1 scene file a couple of months down the line and you still couldn't send it.and now your moaning that it was never included,i know it wasnt included otherwise i wouldnt of had to ask for it.
i just thought you would of had some professionalism, and customer care to bother helping your customers out.
point to self never speculate someone is good at there job.

#1, the .scene file does nothing, you want a .unitypackage, make one by selecting the scene file in project
view and 'assets/export package, don't include the playmaker.dll. Here's what I have, parts of it work, but
I think I'm going to make a simpler one (just get the key to open this door) using this as a model. Check Jean
Fabre's posts, he often includes packages with them.

No, it doesn't work right, I've asked Christopher Orth to fix it, but I guess we're on our own, why
I'm going to do it over with 1 button/keycard, or just a key.

Hi,

ok, none of this can work properly:

First question: Where did you get this package? is it you that created this scene from scratch?

now:

When you create a package ( if you actually created that package) with playmaker, you need to first export the globals, else it will be broken.

So here are the step to properly package a scene with playmaker

1: click on the menu "Playmaker->tools->Export globals"
2: select the scene, AND the "playmakerGlobals_EXPORTED" asset ( that was created with step 1)
3: click on the menu "Assets->create package"
4: remove the playmaker dll
5: proceed

 When you import such package:
1: select "playmakerGlobals_EXPORTED"
2: click on the menu "Playmaker->tools->Import globals" ( you can delete that asset when it's done)

so, can you give us again the package with the exported asset, then I'll be able to see better what could go wrong.

Bye,

 Jean

Hi Jean,

1: click on the menu "Playmaker->tools->Export globals

There's no option for this, only 'custom action wizard' and 'load all playmaker prefabs in project' it says my
version is 1.3.2 I'll see if it's in the new one.

Bye, Terry

Failed to remove asset meta data because some of its object's were still loaded!

Hey, I have a question about this tutorial 12 - Connecting Scripts to Playmaker

At the start of the script that talks to an FSM, where you're declaring the variables.  What is the proper way to recreate this in C#?

var RandNumFSM : PlayMakerFSM;
RandNumFSM =  gameObject.Find("GUIText_RandNum").GetComponent.<PlayMakerFSM>();

Hi there,

Thanks for some great tutorials.

I got stuck on no 5-breakable objects.

I followed the video 8 times from scratch now and still it won't work. Does anyone have a "scene" on this one? I just don´t get what I do wrong all the time. :) The coin refuse to go away.

Best

I'm simply a beginner trying to learn.

In the video 05 - Breakable Objects, why do you look for the parent object, save the value in a variable an the use it to destroy when you can simply drag the parent object in order to destroy it?

This is how I've set it up and it's working as specked:

Same thing happen in video 07 - Global Variables, Events and Managers - Health Pickup
(http://i48.tinypic.com/35n4vna.png)
•   I could simply drag my health_manager game object instead of use a global variable.
•   I could write Event name and not use a global event

•   In order to delete the object, I can drag the game object instead of Get Parent, and use the variable.

Thanks!!
