What are Switchboards and what are their uses?

The Hints and Tips page lists Switchboards as a useful technique. I'm not exactly sure I understand what they are and their use.

Fat Pug Studio:
It's just another name for FSM using Global Transitions to move between states instead of usual spaghetti. Something like this
