they do a free version of racing game kit would really appreciate some actions  to control it.

Controlling this should be pretty straight forward by using the set property actions.

I've not played with my copy of the Pro version yet, but that's how intend to control it.  :)

Would I need the source code package to use the get and set property actions

No, you don't need to source package. You just need to find the variables and control them in playmaker.

Edit: Tried to control this but it's not receiving the control. I'll need to further look in to it, but I'm not using the packaged physics, i'm using Unitycar 2 which does work with this method.
