Title: chat channel
Post by: djaydino on June 23, 2015, 06:50:48 AM
with 2000+ reviews i think its about time to have i chat channel.

it is very simple to add one to the website.

Register your channel
(it can work without Registering but i think that is not a good idea)
Use a Network that has a webchat (Most IRC networks have a webchat.)
add an iframe.
for example :

Code: [Select]
<iframe src="http://webchat.quakenet.org/?channels=PlayMaker" style="border:0; width:100%; height:450px;"></iframe>
or

Code: [Select]
<iframe src="https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.quakenet.org/?&theme=cli#PlayMaker" style="border:0; width:100%; height:450px;"></iframe>
i personally like to use the kiwiirc  (https://kiwiirc.com/embedding)chatbox because it has an extra button @ the bottom right where you can easily send files (pictures, packages, etc..)

there are other chat programs out there but i would prefer an IRC channel because they can be accessed by a standalone program also.  (Mirc for example)

I created a Jabbr channel (http://hutonggames.com/playmakerforum/index.php?topic=9805.0) a while back. It does not have many regulars.

We also had a Skype group for a while which had more total members but the same regulars.

Hi,
The main problem is nobody knows about it
if there would be a tab (next to forum for example) at the top of
the huttonggames website then a lot more people will use this..
i tried if iframe works and it does.

BUT can this channel be seen in Mirc?

if not, i would definitely use a irc channel so it can be used by standalone programs/apps (on Computer, Tablets, Smartphones)
and preferable on freenode Server because the irc chat from unity3d lives also there.

I don't think the platform is the issue, there simply doesn't seem to be that much interest in it. The Jabbr channel is has one-click accessibility and I'm there basically all day most of the time for support and questions.

I'll look into improving visibility on the front page of the forum so users are aware we have a chat channel.

i do think that web-browser only is not a good thing, i use my tablet a lot for irc
and it does not work well on a browser

freenode webchat is also oneclick (http://webchat.freenode.net?channels=PlayMakerDef)
and is also free

with kiwi you can also oneclick (https://kiwiirc.com/client/irc.freenode.net/?&theme=cli#PlayMakerDef)
but has a nice little button on the bottom right witch has a file picker

Personally I hate IRC and have no issues with jabbr, its a much more up to date platform than IRC.

its true that it needs some publicity on the forum. It was only after searching that I came across it.

It is a great place to share ideas and ask questions, lane is almost always in there and if not there is always someone who is willing to help.

For me it is this platform, in this case Jabbr. I don't really find it flexible or useful for communication.

I much prefer we start usig SLACK instead if people have issue with skype.
