Title: Playmaker longevity?
Post by: GarethTheDestro on February 25, 2020, 06:58:04 PM
Hi, so as a disclaimer I have dabbled in Unity over the past couple years but am now really digging into learning it - so I don't know it, or Playmaker all that well.  I also realize how much of a veteran Playmaker is within the Unity ecosystem.

With that said I am curious about the possible life expectancy of Playmaker as an asset.  The tool is amazing, I come from Construct 3 and Playmaker + Unity so far is incredible - especially next to other node based VS.  What worries me in regards to Unity in general is the fact that I bought a few assets a year ago that have deprecated at this point.

With that, I've also played with learning some C#, which i'd like to continue bit by bit, but it isn't as intuitive for me to start creating compared to Playmaker as I come from art and design.  Has anyone else had a fear of dedicating themselves to this tool, or any Unity asset for that matter, or is this a silly concern?

I don't know when PlayMaker started, but I've seen references for it going as far back as 2011. For example on the Showcase page, there is a quote from the dev's of a game called M.U.S.E dated 2011.

I don't think there is any risk of it going defunct any time soon. Besides, even if it went defunct today, you would still be able to use it for 2019.3 for as long as you want. Using that as an example, it going defunct today would still mean you can use it for years without feeling too out of date with Unity. And nothing says it will go defunct even a year from now.

Hi,

I also started to learn playMaker from last year. I can't even write Hello World in C#. Now, with playMaker , I can able to make games.

However, After started to use Playmaker, I can able to read & understand C# scripts. And use appropriate actions on Playmaker and get it done.

2 Days ago, I enrolled a C# + Unity course on Udemy. It is looking easy compared to earlier. Will start to work on C# from next week.

Once you learned C#, you can use C# or Create custom Playmaker actions and etc.

Hi,

that's the ideal learning path indeed. Start with PLayMaker, then slowly, c# will become easier to grasp and you eventually learn basic c# and you are finally fully empowered to do whatever you want.

Bye,

 Jean

Thank you all for the responses, it's really encouraging.  I've been thinking about Playmaker/visual scripting in general as one or the other in regards to learning C#, but this all makes sense.

I don't know when PlayMaker started

I think it took off in 1968. Things were slow as shit back then. You had to "write" the states on little cardboard cards and be sure not to bend the little metallic magnetic edge on the side of it. You could not put more than two actions per state, which you referenced by placing metal plugs in little holes drilled in the card in a grid fashion. The combinations represented indexes, one for each action. There also were not more than sixty actions (!), give or take.
Wages were higher though.

Jean and Alex are much older now and live in the woods, still coding.

:)

Alex came up with all of this. I just took the train later as I was very active on the forum ( cause I really liked it and wanted to help out), Alex asked me to do that properly and push support on the forum, third party, custom actions, etc.

Bye,

 Jean

Hi.
And Jean one day asked me the help support properly as well (and Clean up Ad spammers etc)

I was (and still am) very active on the forum, also because i really liked Playmaker and it was also a way for me to learn more about Playmaker and c# by Troubleshooting issues from other peoples posts and making custom actions :)

Thank you for all the help and support you provide!
I never saw such a support with other tools I used. This support is priceless for someone who want to learn how to work with unity.
This is really smart to invest that much time to help the community via the forum.
And it is a proof of an asset that will be alive for a long time!

Hi,

yep, I agree that it was a very smart move from Alex ( we expected no less in all fairness :) )

This is also the result of how PlayMaker is working, the key to PlayMaker success are the custom actions, and since the vast majority of users don't code, it's necessary to provide constant support. Other publishers try to make an automated visual scripting where support is not needed as much, but the compromise is performance and questionnable benefits over actually learning scripting.

Bye,
