Title: Playmaker Game Jam 2020
Post by: tcmeric on September 20, 2020, 09:53:24 AM
Hi Everyone,

We are just getting ready for Playmaker Game Jam 2020~

We are shooting for a date in mid October. That should give us around a month to plan. Rules will likely follow something quite similar to last year.

In a change this year, we are looking for a few volunteers to help run things more smoothly. Qualifications? There are not many. Its more organizational work, feedback, and communications (forum posting, twitter, etc).

Like the years before, we are using the Playmaker (Unofficial) Slack chat channel to organize. You can join here: https://invite-playmaker-slack.herokuapp.com/

Feel free to join tag me (tcmeric) or join the volunteer channel with the slack group.

Also as the years before, we will be giving away a few small prizes, but the focus is always on community, education, and fun.

Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Looking forward to having you there! We have had some pretty great gamejam games from the past 2 years of jams. Always amazing to see what people come up with.

Yes! Looking forward to seeing you both!

It will be the friday/saturday/sunday of Nov 6, 7, 9. (Basically the first weekend in November).

Obviously Halloween weekend was out. And the weekend before Halloween will be too soon.

I will post the rules soon, but basically the same as last year. Honestly, we have given up on forcing everyone onto the same timezone  8)

So it starts your own timezones friday at 8am (some people will have to start after work, which is ok). Until 12 midnight, on sunday night.

When it says no paid assets, does this also include tools like automatic lightprobe placement, or a mesh combiner? What about stuff like Aquas water or volumetric lighting or fog?

Actually, further to the above, what about the use of purchased sounds?

Hi, thanks for the question. No paid assets (including sounds, mesh combiners, etc). You can find free open source sounds online, or you can record your own with a mic.

What about Umodeler or Clayxels to make mesh? I mean are we limited to blender only? They make models, but I've never used blender... And if that's the case, where is the line drawn? Am I to not use Corel Draw either because I paid for that?

Sorry I'm not being sarcastic, just trying to know I'm playing fair like everyone else.

Hi.
Corol draw is not used directly in unity.
Blender / 3ds max etc also not so thats fine.

You can also find a lot of free characters and other stuff on the asset store.

Same for sounds, you can use anything to make your own sounds or get free sounds and give credits when applicable.

But if you would be characters / music / tools you bought from the asset store, that's not allowed.

A Gamjam is about concept and not so much how it looks.

Hi.
Corol draw is not used directly in unity.

I know but isn't it just a technicality that Umodeler runs out of the Unity window? It's just a model tool. It doesn't give you any kind of edge or shortcut into making a game, it just makes a mesh like any other stand alone modeling tool would. It would work exactly the same if it had it's own EXE. 3DS max costs twice as much to own for only a single month, when compared to owning Umodeler outright.

I know it's just a quick event and not meant to be fabulous, but even if I am to just use a cube as a character, I can't even do a UV to put a texture I scribble up on one side like a face. That's why I would like to use the modeling tool that I know how to use.

Feel free to use Umodeler if you want. I dont think it goes against the spirit of the rule. Which is to make an equal and fair game jam for everyone. It doesn't offer anything that blender doesn't.

Please, just use your best judgement, and that will be enough  ;D

AWESOME!!!

My first ever game Jam.. Im so excited :)

Just as a thought maybe there should be a Game Jam section on the forum index :D This might be the second time I've ever clicked on Playmaker Announcements, since being back I usually only visit a few sections on the index (yep I need to be more involved lol!).

Also it sounds like these game jams are only once a year but every 6 months sounds so much better hahaha (I know its dependent on user involvement and I have no idea what that is maybe annually is the best fit but I would definitely love to do more.. again soooo excited!)

@tcmeric Sunday is Nov 8th ;) or I guess it could be the 9th depending on where you live :)

P.S. Thank you to all the members of this forum for helping me on my journey to be able to even make a game (3 thumbs up!).
