Title: Official Tutorial Request Thread
Post by: Lane on February 20, 2014, 12:28:02 PM
If you would like to see a specific tutorial then feel free to request it in this thread!

Also, we've got a Trello Board for upvoting the tutorials you would like to see, so please go vote on which topics you would like to have a new tutorial on and if it's not on Trello then post in this thread so I can add it to the board and get votes on it.

Hello, I think we still haven't seen how to setup an UI yet. I don't mean the actual UI (buttons, functionality, etc) but how it interacts with the rest of the game. For example creating a simple pause menu - where is the UI stored, how do we activate it when we hit the pause button, what is the proper way to stop the rest of the game from running. What are the best practices on that topic with Playmaker. We've seen many cool effects and game fragments, but we haven't seen how to actually get there as an end user.

Native arrays are something Alex is working on for an update soon, so ArrayMaker tutorials are on the backburner for now but expect something on the Array front soon.

This is something fairly advanced, I'll look into it and investigate making it work so I can produce a tutorial, but it'll be some time.

Great tuts Lane, very informative and helpful!

I'm glad you like them =)

Camera single image capture tutorial.  Imagine the player has a camera, and they take a picture that is saved so that I can have an image inventory.

As mentioned via our pm's, this would require Pro for RenderTextures so you wouldn't be able to accomplish it =/

Any chance for a NGUI version?

I don't use NGUI myself and haven't checked out the provided example scenes but if the examples aren't clear then I can get into it and make tutorials. What do you think?

Huge thank you for the request response. Amazing and very helpful!

You're welcome! =)

I'd like to see a tutorial of a good step by step process of mecanim with playmaker.

I have been able to start an idle stance and have the guy move by pressing w. But my mecanim setup has blends to turn left and right and the W just isnt going to handle all of that.
Ive read all of the threads and checked out the links but they just dont put it all together for me.
So id love atleast a basic video to know i am on the right track.

Redhawk thanks for the links, and yes i do have the additional package...and i think i might have figured out my disconnect.

I have a animator built already from my unity tutorial. What i have been doing is trying to figure out how to link playmaker to that animator...
But I cant do that can I?,What I need to do is recreate the animator in play maker using the animator add-on....correct?

If that is correct i feel seriously stupid, but i guess i had it in my mind that i wasnt going to have to redo my work instead just connect the two lol
Title: Re: Official Tutorial Request Thread
Post by: Redhawk on April 02, 2014, 05:04:19 PM
You should be able to just attach an FSM to your character and drive those animations.  For instance if you have a Speed variable in your Animator now, then you should be able to see that Speed Variable via the Animator Add-On and change the variable (say to 2).

Great start with the Rift to Mecanim tutorial. I vote for anything and everything else you can related to the Oculus Rift. Specifically:

Raycasting for object interactivity (as in, highlighting an object that you are close to and looking at).

Tutorial Request .....

Move objects around a maze using touch (Android) or Mouse Down (since both work the same).  So you have more than 1 item to move, there are walls that the object should not be able to pass through, you can move in specific directions (up down, left right).  I'm having a hard time getting an object to move within the walls (without passing through the walls) via touch where it follows your finger/mouse and without passing through other objects.

Just how you can use them and what they do. Like these tutorials http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6084D9673DDB0306 though he only made 16 videos, but they helped me a lot though. I tried going through the manual and learn what every action did, but there isn't enough explanation for me to grasp it so videos would really help .

Also I'd like more 2d tutorials and perhaps simple app making tutorials like a website feed app with smooth menus and stuff. I know unity3d is a game engine and I never made an app with it but if it's possible than that would be cool.

1. How to create an inventory system (the ability to pick up keys, memos, weapons, etc.). This might fall into the array maker category.

2. How to create a 3rd person camera setup with camera collision detection (to keep it from going through walls). Maybe something similar to the Hutong Games First and Third Person Cameras tutorial, but with camera collision.

3. Using Playmaker to create menus for game options and inventory menus.

Thank you,

Does anyone know or could recommend some upto date tutorials on using playmaker for 2D games and would be even better that are designed for android.

Thanks

Hi,

it doesn't matter the target really, IOS or android, Windows, Tizen would not make any difference in the way you design the interaction.

I would get the 2d Platformer remake I did posted on Github, it's the 2d platformer from Unity Learn, 100% rebuidled with PlayMaker, it's definitly something that will help you study how 2d can be controlled with PlayMaker.

https://github.com/jeanfabre/PlayMaker--UnityLearn--2dPlatformer

Let me know if you have questions.

I would like a tutorial showing a good way to make a character creation screen similar to old school RPGs where one can increase/decrease attributes, choose perks and skils from pop-lists. And increase/decrease the ranks in the selected skills

Fallout 2, Wasteland 2.

tooltips are currently in an .xml file, but any impementation is ok, I am perfectly willing to change it for a good end result

tutorial might be whatever format is easier, video, text, sample project/package. any one would be greatly appreciated.

I'd love:

1. A rhythm game tutorial
2. A slower walkthrough/breakdown of the Simon Says game that Sebas made since some of the elements of it are missing
3. A tutorial on the 2 platformer that Jean Fabre remade using Playmaker from the UnityLearn since the scene isn't set up on the one I downloaded isn't set up.

Hi,

What is not setup on the 2d platformer? the package has a working scene, in the "PlayMaker Unity 2D Demo" folder, have you opened it?

 Bye,

 Jean

Hi, where exactly do you have problem with this? is it the UI management, the data or the rendering and management in game of the final character setup?

the problem with doing a tutorial on this is content, I guess I could go with simple shapes but it will not be nice...

The menu GUI with the options is something I can do. It doesn´t actually preview the options but simple forward and backward buttons for each category that change an integer is something I can do no problem.

Content, is also ok, Simple head shapes with flat colors and face features sprites with transparency. I have someone who can do the hairs.

For handling Data I intend to have all the selected options saved into an .xml file, since I work well with them, and they are very well integrated in my workflow.

But I have no idea what is the best way to actually implement this. I Have no idea what would be a good way of managing the textures, Should I use a texture atlas? etc...
The closest thing I did to this was a very simple texture swap, I am quite lost on where to start,a nd how to do it.

As for the tutorial not being pretty, due to just using simple shapes, that doesn´t bother me at all, as long as I can understand the algorithms well enough to implement them myself with my own assets.

Other then the assets and the menu, I don´t know where to start.

Hi,

Ok, basically, what you need is a selection system using xml. I'll work on this, where you'll be able to pick a mesh out of a given set and it will save it in xml, as well as remember it from sessions to sessions.

 Jean

Thank you very much, could you also do one showing how to add sprites to a texture, material? If it is not too much to ask?

If I have the textures with the full faces, I can swap them, no problem, but I have no idea on how to do it so individual eyes, nose and mouth can be selected.(adding simple shapes, or random sprites just to show me how it work would be perfect, doesn´t need to be pretty)

Hi,

you;ll need to learn Unity some more here, basically you can't have sprites on mesh materials, sprites are meant to be used for 2d and UI, for 3d models, it's only textures. So make sure you fully understand these differences.

I'll do a texture selection system as well.

 Jean

Hi,

 Started on this: https://twitter.com/JeanAtPlayMaker/status/925341887858438145

dedicated thread here: http://hutonggames.com/playmakerforum/index.php?topic=16054.0

It will take time to complete, but I think I'll release it as incremental updates.

As for textures and sprites, they just don't work together at all, you use textures on meshes and for all material needs, and you use Sprites for all 2d and UI needs. that's all, you can't mix it up so much ( yes UI allows you to show a raw image as texture, but that's not optimal and should only be done for things like renderToTextures, camera feeds or streaming).

Bye,

 Jean

What kind of "advanced" tutorials are you looking for?

I was thinking about stuff like PlayMaker Sequencer Commands. I saw this on some addons and I really don't understand how it works.

Hi.
Do you mean something like a dialogue system?

if something else, do you have some samples or links/names from those add-ons

One of the addons I use that support that is Dialogue System, but not sure if there are other ways to use this feature.

I searched and found no answer.

But i was wondering if there was a tutorial geared towards creating a 2d top down action adventure? A Zelda-like, think A Link to the Past.

To familiarize myself with Unity and Playmaker i am recreating some features of ALTTP, a player character with movement and actions, 2 enemies, a hud, a couple items.

I would like to request a tutorial that shows how to create from a.xmlfile a list similar to the one used to select actions in playmaker´s action browser fr, where there are clickable categories, and then when a category is cliked a new list with clickable options dropsdown and pushes the other categories down, until a new categorie is clcked on.

I have a few .xml files with categories that contain option sin each category, and want to have that sort of interface.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,

I can take care of that and provide a sample using xmlMaker, it will be straight forward, the complex bit is to get the uGui right, reading from xml is ok.

can you provide a sample of the xml you want to use and I'll base the sample on this so that it fits.

Hi.
it depends a bit on your setup.

can player change in main menu (before starting main game)
or during gameplay?

Probably you need to set some prefabs for each character, then use resources load (Ecosystem (https://hutonggames.fogbugz.com/default.asp?W1181))

but if you wat to regular swap during gameplay you might want to load all characters and disable / enable the one you use/not use

Hi.
It depends on your game, but basically if you load the player within a game scene.
then on main menu when player select you can save the selection as a int (start with 0).
(save in playerprefs for example)

then in game scene load (get) the value  then use an array with the characters in it.
and use array get.
the saved int you need to set as the index.
so if 1st character was selected then it should be int 0, because an array start at 0 not 1.

Then create your player with the prefab you got from the array.
