Title: Ecosystem: Custom Actions/samples Browser v0.6.11 [April 2021]
Post by: jeanfabre on May 21, 2014, 08:06:35 AM
Hi Everyone,

Ok!!! so finally, finally, I have a mature enough system to give it to you, it's very early in development stage and potential, but it will already be very useful and dramatically increase productivity and exposure of all the custom actions that where and will be developed and shared to the community.

This browser is an online browser, it doesn't search in your projects, it searches in various github public repositories.  you don't need to copy paste code, create new files, messing with manual downloads from various places, then drag files into the assets folder. Now it's all embedded and easy to add new custom actions!!

Feedback more then welcome!! More will come, both in terms of content as well as features.

Follow the rss feed to keep track of what's new. Everytime new actions will be made available, it will be notified on this rss feed,

That is awesome! Is there an official repo it pulls from? Will submitting actions on the forums be enough to be added to the list?

Hi,

It's not "official" per say, I am hosting the repositories for now. Currently I use two repositories, they are public and hosted by Github. I only work with github on this ecosystem because I use their rest api to search repositories ( eh eh :) )

https://github.com/jeanfabre/PlayMakerCustomActions_U3
https://github.com/jeanfabre/PlayMakerCustomActions_U4

Currently, adding new actions is a manual process with no wizard or editing tools to help along the process, hopefully one day it will be integrated. So for now, I have to manually add new actions for them to become available. I plan on actively add actions as we go along. Any new request for a custom action that I would provide will be hosted now there.

Keep using the action request of the section forum to shout for new stuff, that's the best way today, maybe I'll add a form within the ecosystem to submit requests, that would be for sure convenient.

If you want to participate to the effort of publishing to these repositories, they are public, get in touch with me, and I'll show you how to do it. There is only few things to be aware of and your work will be available within the ecosystem.

Bye,

 Jean

Hi Jean,

Thanks for this release and for all your hard work with adding functionality to Playmaker. I am new to the forums but have been using Unity and Playmaker for many weeks now and am loving it. I especially want to say thanks for the Unity 2d actions and Arraymaker, both are excellent as well :)

Merry Christmas!

Hi Jean, do you know if there is any problem to this new Ecosystem recognize Playmaker bought directly from Playmaker's site?
I bought my playmaker directly on the site, and after I installed this new ecosystem, I receive the message that I need to have playmaker installed to work... But I already have it, I tryed to restart, reinstall playmaker, but seems like this new ecosystem only recognize Playmaker bought by AssetStore.

Hi,

uhm, there is no difference between the asset store version and the bought version.

but it could be that you are using an old version, what version of PlayMaker are you using?

Do you work with PlayMaker on that project already? or is it a fresh install?

Sorry I did not see your answer...
I'm using the latest version of playmaker and Unity 4.5.
And my project already was using playmaker and the previous version of ecosystem.

now I'm receiving this message.

also, meanwhile can you tell me the exact playmaker version you have ( using the PlayMaker menu/About PlayMaker version is at the bottom of that popup)

Is there plans to integrate the ecosystem in the playmaker instalation package?
So it will be already available everytime we install the playmaker package on a project. Sometimes I keep pressing Alt+E on a fresh project hoping to open the ecosystem but it only opens the edit menu...  :P :-[

Hi,

I don't think the ecosystem is going to be part of PlayMaker official package in the short term, I have developed this in the hope that it will become a standard and could well become solid enough for PlayMaker to study the possibility to include it officially. It needs a lot of work still to reach its full potential, I estimate that only 20% of the potential is currently exploited in terms of feature (https://trello.com/b/U0AH0SHy/ecosystem)... so indeed lots of work remaining.

What I have done is create a shortcut to package on my computer on my desktop and so it's easy to just add it.

typically, you can also put it in the standard assets so that it becomes listed in the unity menu, but I haven't tried that, do you want me to investigate?

also, just checked the states, Ecosystem traffic just reached 20K visits!! that's since it's launch in April 2014. Traffic growth is linear, with this monthly traffic increased by 20% :) , and the split between search and download is 50/50 so it means each search ruffly equals one download, which I think is a good ratio and means people are getting what they search for in average. So this is very promising!

Bye,

 Jean

It is indeed a great work. Much better than look the forums topic by topic. I'd love to see it integrated to the Playmaker official release package or at least a download option inside the addons tab (much like the easysave2 option to import the playmaker actions). About the standard assets list I never tried that too. Every time I start a new project I install the extra packages by the assets store but I noticed that some packages are displayed on the menu where you can choose where you want to put the project files. It would be great to have the ecosystem on this menu.

Congratulations and thank you for your efforts!  8)

P.S. the Trello link you posted is not working.

I don't think people use it to 'search' for actions.  If like me, they just download everything.  That's the point of playmaker is to have as many actions as possible.

Looks good as it is though.

Hi,

Trello board is now public, sorry, I did not see it was only org visible.

As for downloading everything, this is not the spirit indeed ( but read on, I have a solution cooking). Many, including myself would complain instantly, because it increase the compilation time ( until Unity only compiles what's really needed...).

so, a granular, get what-you-need-only is definitly the way to go, typical example, the networking actions that is a problem on many platform because they are not part of the targeted platform. Or Action that are only for a given module, why host dozens of actions on a module you will not use, like the physics 2d, the Ui, Mecanim,  pathfinding.

I haven't counted the number of custom actions, but I would bet it's way above the 1000's if not more including all the the third partys on the asset store providing PlayMaker support.

however, I hear you on the argument of "yeah... but I have to get the one I always need always and always and it's a pain".

YES :) we all agree on this and that's true for regular packages outside PlayMaker too :)

To address this, I will create a user management system so you can log into the ecosystem and combine your own package of custom actions you will flag and it will create a single package you can access and install. Like a "favorite" tool allowing you to stock your preffered actions into packages.

I think this feature will require a small subscription fee, but I am not sure yet, like the ability to point to private github reps for teams working on sensitive work and wnat to benefit from the ecosystem. Your feedback on this ( what should be free, what could be charge a small monthly/yearly fee) is very much needed.

I think with this, it solves both types of use, either you get the one you need as you build your project, or you install that custom package of yours and you have everything ( everything you defined) in one go.

Bye,

 Jean

Hi,

Thanks :) I believe in this tool very much, so also make sure not to hesitate criticise it so that I can see where to take it, the search for example lacks an exhaustive listing and convenient tools to get more out of the results, etc etc. it also lacks a proper channel for communication, rss isn't really suitable as is,twitter for the big anoucments ok, but for each and every new addition, I need to find something automated so you can be informed of what's new without creating too much work on the author.

Hi,

ok, new patch update for the Ecosystem:

-- Unity context is now handled properly. Watch out of the physics samples that are NOT working as expected, Unity 5 has a new physics engine update and things aren't working exactly the same, currently investigating to provide u5 specific physics samples

-- slight issue I will investigate on the Md object inspector, it works on 4 but not on 5, I suspect something change in the way inspector works for objects.

-- new quick github button to go online directly to the file hosted on github, ( easier for publishers and curious people :))

you'll notice also the updater inside the Ecosystem that on the next search will prompt that you there is a new update, so this is the first update since I implemented this and it works fine, very pleased with this. You still need to manually download it, cause I want to be able to have users attention if there is a break that requires some manual operation, but I think I'll provide an option to update directly or simply go online and download/install manually.

Hi,

 New Patch for Ecosystem.

I want to make the sharing of custom actions easier for contributors, and I think github means too much setup for simple sharing, I looked around and found Snipt, a great and simple code sharing system. Support if great, and so I decided to port it fully inside the browser.

https://snipt.net

- It's seamless for the end user, you browse as usual, get what you want as usual, you won't even now!
- Click on "preview", it will take you either to github or snipt viewing online the readl source of that item

I released two actions, for testing:

https://snipt.net/jeanfabre/

Full explanations on how to share actions with Snipt, will come next week.

Hi,

Just a quick funcky stat coming from the Ecosystem Server. 10K+ searches and downloads per month :) which brings the total of searchs and downloads to more than 52K since april 2014! There is a 50/50 split between searches and actual downloads which means that in average a one search leads to one download, which I think is a great stat. Tho, I think I'll implement a button "I did not found what I want" and I will record your search criterias so that I know what people expects to find, and adjusts to match your needs.

So I am glad this system is used! more to come ( working on Photon atm to bring the latest iteration on Ecosystem, Vectrosity, etc etc).

Title: Re: Ecosystem: Custom Actions Browser v0.4.3 [June 2015]
Post by: jeanfabre on June 05, 2015, 09:52:14 AM
Hi Guys,

New version up to improve sharing of custom actions via Snipt (https://snipt.net/jeanfabre/) online repositories, and cross referencing in general from various urls.

As the content becomes more and more widely distributed, sometime an action makes reference to anothe file that is not in the same repository, or in the example of snipt, that simple a reference as a plain url, and so snipt sharing was constraint to custom actions with no dependancy typically. This is now addressed.

a typical header for the new depedancy would look like this:

Code: [Select]
/*--- __ECO__ __ACTION__
EcoMetaStart
{
"script dependancies":[
"https://github.com/jeanfabre/PlayMaker--Utils/raw/master/PlayMakerUtils_FsmVar.cs?assetFilePath=Assets/PlayMaker Utils/PlayMakerUtils_FsmVar.cs"
]
}
EcoMetaEnd
---*/

so the dependancy can now be a plain url followed by a "assetFilePath" property representing the asset file path within the project. so any url can be served this way, it can be a github raw url, or a snipt raw url ( you can get to the raw url via the "raw" button at the bottom right of the snipt interface).

If you want to implement such dependancy and you are not sure, just pm me and I'll guide you.

Bye,

 Jean

Jean - amazing tool! Question: do you have any means of reporting bugs/errors?
Found a bug when importing "Ray Cast2d" action. It fails to also install:

IFsmCollider2DStateAction.cs
IFsmCollider2DStateAction.cs.meta

in, "PlayMaker Custom Actions\Physics 2d\Internal" causing an error.
https://github.com/jeanfabre/PlayMaker--UnityLearn--2dPlatformer/tree/master/Assets/PlayMaker%20Unity%202D/Actions/Internal

Passing it along to ya. Thanks!

EDIT: After some time -- I am guessing those files may have existed in the PlaymakerUnity2d package I installed after the fact.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting. This is fixed now (https://twitter.com/JeanAtPlayMaker/status/636518377637445632), delete the offending scripts and download Raycast2d again from the ecosystem, it will now download all the necessary files :)

For Ecosystem bugs, simply make a new post ( it's better for organisation, then appending to this thread for example :) )

Hi,

New version up with minor fixes and feature enhancement.

Now, on some items which are tools, wizards and editor utils, when clicking on the item in the list, it will launch the actual editor window, instead of just pointing to the file in the assets.

it also fixes some path issues on meta data, it's internal, but the features presented by the ecosystem will be a lot more reliable.

Hi,

Quick update on the server. now all content is served via the 2018 and 2019 github repositories, the old ones are still there, in case, all content has been moved to 2018.

This was much needed, and will free up some of the api rate limits you might experience when usage peaks.

Let me know if you hit any issues :)

Can you please point me out how to search for custom actions in the current state?

The problem is the github server (overload) and we are looking for a solution.

This 'one man' is the creator of this 3rd party playmaker asset (Ecosystem) :)
This is not made by Playmaker.

Don't get me wrong, Jean is a legend and I am aware that he has gone above and beyond with everything he has done for the PlayMaker community!

Like many other developers, PlayMaker is the most essential tool in my Unity arsenal, so by proxy, the Ecosystem is just as essential in my workflow.

Ecosystem has been non-functional for over a week now and no one seems to know where Jean is. He's the only person who can get it up and running again.

If there were at least one other person who moderated the Ecosystem then this current situation may have been avoided. It's like working on a Unity project that you don't backup. If your hard drive fails you're screwed ;)

I know we can search the github repository but this is far from an elegant solution.

Hi.
Jean has responded and Jean and Alex are looking for a solution.

Basically from what i understand Ecosystem on github has reached a 'search' limit.
due to 'to many users' :)

At the moment there is no quick solution i think, else it would already have been fixed :)

But i understand that it's not easy without it at the moment.
Something i did is download the whole repositories and search for action on my harddisk instead of the website for now.

That's a very good idea!

Hi.
If you use github desktop then you can always easily pull updates.

It's working today, thanks for fixing it. I was desperate to get some actions to finish the demo of my game xDDD

Would be nice if they host ECOsystem through their own custom-made servers heck I wouldn't mind watching an ad or two to help them pay off their costs. ECOsystem is worth it.
