Blender to Unity 4 Animation issue

Hi guys I'm pretty new to playmaker so bear with me.

I have a character that I animated in blender I used the  @ format to export all my animations. example I have character.fbx then character@run.fbx and so on. I import into unity and i can preview the animation and if i use mecanim the animations work fine. I add all the animations to the character with the animatin component. but if I try to play any of the animations with playmaker nothing happens. I tried adding a play animation action to my state and it doesn't play. i tried just draging the animations into play maker to make an animation state then I alt click the state while its running but still no animation. not sure what I am missing . do you have to use mechanim in unity 4 ? and can playmkaer talk to mecanim? not sure how to procede with playmaker if I can't get any animations to work. any help would be great .

 Mecanim is supported here:

using this, you will be able to take full advantage of Mecanim. The package has samples as well ( based on Unity Mecanim example package).
