Cheetah3D vs Maya vs 3DMax
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:36:07 AM »
Hi!
I have tried to learn Maya, but I have no experience with 3D modeling. And I think Maya was very difficult to learn if you are a beginner like me.
How is Cheetah3D vs Maya and 3DMax?
Cheetah3D is cheaper, but can you import models from Cheetah3D to Unity as easy as Maya?

Heya,

I've been using 3D packages for over 10 years (specifically Lightwave 3D) and I must say in my experience the best way you could go is with Blender. Unity can read native .blend files without the need for conversion and best of all it's free  :-)

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Rabagast
I work with Cheetah since my 10 years old and I like it a lot.
It´s simple, clean and powerful.
I would recommend you Cheetah3D.
Unity can read directly Cheetah3D files ".jas". I think is more easy than Maya.
Cheers

Thank you!
I took a look at both, but my first impression was better on Cheetah3D.
I think I will follow some tutorials :)

Now I have followed a tutorial on Cheetah3D, and I made a cartoon head.
Amazing! :D

Hi!
I don't know if this one is working, but I try... :)

It's not quiet perfect yet, but it's the first time I make something in 3D.

I made another head in the demo version, but I couldn't save it, so, this head was made by my own in its entirety, without following any tutorial.  :D

It´s nice!! ;D
Try more and put them in Unity and create interactivity with it on Playmaker.

I made a simple movement on it. But I will of course experiment more. :)

But I have another question. Is it possible to make hair?

In Cheetah?
I think so but you have to go to the Cheetah3D forum. You will make it with a script.

Even though I'm a max user, I am going to suggest using Blender if you are starting out... mainly because at the end of the day the core functionality of a 3d package is going to be relatively universal... sure, there will be some differences but if you're aiming for modeling, the skill-set is essentially universal and the main differences are usually in how that package approaches it from a UI point of view.

and because Blender is free... whereas max, though it is my preferred package, costs money.

That said, I will surely suggest max after blender though... but then again that's because i'm a fan of it more than anyhting else and it's what I'm most familiar with.

I'm a proud Maya user, and I have used it for years but I would still advise you to go to Blender much like many here as its' FREE! and if you're starting out that is where you should be in my opinion, unless you have a large sum of money in the bank for once you have finished learning Maya/Max and can fork out the cash to buy it...

On the other hand, if you cannot get on with Blender as some people just seem to have trouble getting into that, then you can always try something called Silo2. It's great, VERY cheap and extremely powerful... I would suggest looking into it if you're interested (it's cheaper on Steam than it is on their main website)

It looks like you're using Cheater3D already though?

I just thought that I would give my input =]

Kind Regards

Hi, Red and Patriick!

I have tried Maya, but it's not for beginners.
I think Cheetah3D was very good, but I am still new to this, so Cheetah3D or Blender or Silo2 doesn't matter! Maybe I should follow some tutorials on all of them! Then I can see which of them I like the most. :)

But thank you very much for all the advice :)
