Platformer control best practice

Attempting to make a simple platformer controls. Thinking in the vein of random heroes or league of evil.

What do you think the best practice would be to go about making a controller with playmaker? Inputs based on touch screen location? Touch object? Or Touch GUI?

Are there any other methods I'm missing?
