Text Mesh Pro [SOLVED]
« on: March 29, 2017, 04:46:43 PM »
Now that Text Mesh Pro is available for free, are there any actions that would allow me to change the text within the input box?

for example... I want to make a simple countdown 3, 2, 1... GO! but I'm not sure how I could change the text...

so, I'm curious, does someone releasing a paid action set mean that plans to create a free set gets dropped?

Hi,

of course not, anyone is free to provide support for an asset or feature even though it's covered already by a paid or free solution :)

Hi, I am the creator of that Patreon account. So far I have created actions for several packages. I hope to continue doing so. I started with packages I was using, and then switched to ones I thought the community could benefit from.

The fees from the Patreon account are just going to pay for the cost of assets (and even then, it won't cover that). I am hoping more people will step up and donate a few dollars a month. Creating entire action sets do take some time.

Playmaker has done a good job of creating actions for all kinds of things, but its just not possible for them to cover everything. Especially third party assets. And many asset creators are not interested in doing so, don't understand playmaker, or don't understand the general value to them.

Its still being discussed, but I think the plan is to release the playmaker action sets from the Patreon account under an open source license a few months after they have been created. Those who support the Patreon account will continue to get first crack at them, as a thank you for their support. Following that, they will be open for everyone. I am doing this because I want them to get the most use possible. They do no good only being used by a few people.

Sets finished so far:
VRTK (work in progress its huge) - https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/64131
Beautify - https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/61730
Liquid Volume- https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/70992
X-Weapon Trails- https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/20972
VR Weapons- https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/66387
Plus many one offs released on this forum.

VRTK, VR Weapons are already free now. Beautify will be the next one to be release for free (which really is a wonderful asset on the unity store).

I am currently working the playmaker action set for Post Processing Stack, which is a free asset on the unity store, and also great.

Hi,

Thanks for the clarifications. Let's see if people swing with this, I hope so, because we all know how much work all of this represents, so this patreon system may give some positive momentum to community work.

Some publishers simply provide both as well, so that future members finding your work can choose to get it for free or sponsor you via patreon anyway just to let you know their appreciation. So I would suggest you keep both and make it clear to everyone.

 Bye,

 Jean

to be clear I didn't mean any criticism, was just curious about what the plans were in situations where something was in the queue to be worked on and then a paid set is released

Jean, do you have any suggestions on which license to use it under?

I am looking for free to use, distribute for free, but not sell.

I am familiar with creative commons licenses, but they dont apply to digital per se. MIT seems a little too open.

Hi,

I combine MIT and LGPL for ArrayMaker:

This package is released under LGPL license: http://opensource.org/licenses/LGPL-3.0.
This content is released under the (http://opensource.org/licenses/MIT) MIT License.

I was told by a major studio who required proper licensing for using ArrayMaker without getting problems down the line and they said this combination is a good one.

Under the LGPL, there seems to be a big bit about linking to libraries, static or dynamic. I see comments online by people stating that it must be "replaceable". If games made in unity use arraymaker, is this a violation of the license, because arraymaker cannot be replaced or removed with another library?

Hi,

No it's not. We encourage Game to be made with ArrayMaker :) ArrayMaker can be replaced with another library of your choice ( some can be replaced by the new PlayMaker 1.8 functionnalities, namely FsmArray variable), you can write your own too.
