Advice on upgrading to a newer version of unity.
« on: February 25, 2015, 05:21:32 PM »
I have been using unity version 4.3.4 for awhile, and it seems to me that it is buggier than version 4.2.0+. Whether it is getting out-of-the-box shaders to work, playmaker to work properly, or issues with getting the position of objects to be parented, I've been considering making the jump to 4.5. But not sure if it's the best idea when it comes to stability overall.

Have experienced playmaker users felt that 4.5 is less buggy than previous versions or the version I'm using?

Hi,

I would go straight to 4.6.2 have you tried that?

Actually no, I haven't tried that version, let alone zipped up/backup the current converted 4.3.4 projects.

Hi,

Careful with large project coming from 4x, cause 5x has a new physics engine all together, and very different in behavior.

I'm concerned about 5 not only for physics like you mentioned, but the GUI as a whole.

Hi,

-- the old GUI system remains as is, so you'll be fine
-- any third party assets will need to provide unity 5 support, so it's on a per asset bases
-- the new UI is in par with 4.6, so upgrading will be fine.

Bye,

Sounds to me I should just stick with 4.6 until I can get a iOS game up and running. So would 4.6 be the most stable, regardless if it's with playmaker 1.7.5.2 , 1.7.7, or 1.7.8? Or would it be best to go with 4.5 for now?

Don't you basically need 5 to get 64-bit to build onto an iOS device?

Therefore, 4.6.2 would be the best and most stable option at this time? Do think most projects that I made are less than 100 mbs, but seems to me that 5 right now would not be the most stable at this time.

Hi,

Indeed not, I would wait for 5.1 on any sensitive projects, especially is Physics is involved, in which case major refactoring will be required as the physics engine is very different with a major update making it behave differently.

simply duplicate and try, that's the best way to be sure about whether or not to upgrade.

This is great advice. Simply make a copy of your project and try moving it to 5. Find out what breaks and if it's easy to fix on your end. I don't know how to explain it but after working in the new 5 editor I feel Unity just feels great and responds quickly and smoothly. But most of the 4.x stable releases should work for your project. I haven't met a build yet I felt made Playmaker unstable with current respective releases.

So it would be 4.6.2 then. In that case, I'll download it and back up projects that I use.
